In Honor of (2014 Boston Marathon)

Saturday December 21, 2013  Turlough Meehan

My run today was in honor of Turlough.  Turlough is where this is all began for me and what’s all about.  His courageous battle taught me so much about love, hope, and life.  I look for his strength to guide me through the challenges of life.

Eric was in the ICU at Children’s Hospital in Boston along side Turlough.  Eric was a courageous teenager and received his treatment through Dana Farber.  Eric lost his battle around the same time as Turlough.  Eric is one of the many children who were at Children’s Hospital during Turlough’s stay.  Phelim and Amanda think about Eric and his family often.

Saturday January 18, 2014 Keith Lewis

Keith lost his battle with cancer on January 18, 2013 at the age of 67. Keith was a great person and a dedicated family man, husband to Sue and father to Ken and Josh. He loved to golf and hunt. He was a Police Officer with the Town of Dennis for 32 years. He made his way through the ranks and retired as a lieutenant. He was loved and respected but the community but most importantly by the officers who works beside him daily. He loved patrol and often worked the 4-12 shift. I was lucky to have met Keith through the years but never had the opportunity to work for him. Many of my co workers tell me they aspire to be the leader and supervisor Keith was.

Saturday February 8, 2014 Lena Messina Cichella

Lena Messina Cichella Thompson was the first American born daughter of Italian immigrant parents in the small northern town of AuSable Forks, New York  fondly call “the Forks”.  Lena’s father owned a produce market and she would accompany him on his deliveries to those who summered in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains.  Lena met the love of her life Earl Thompson when she was 17, he was 20.   Completely taken by this older man, Lena and Earl married and had four children. Lena loved to cook her famous spaghetti sauce and both she and Earl loved music.  The house was full of people from the neighborhood every Sunday afternoon all enjoying her delicious food and listening to the Mills Brothers.

Winters being what they are in northern New York, the family moved to Connecticut, eventually moving to Cape Cod after retirement.  Lena and Earl traveled the country subsequently settling in Weeki Watchie, Florida where they became snow birds.  Lena loved to be surrounded by her children, their spouses and all eleven grandchildren.

Lena was taken from us all too soon succumbing to leukemia in her home on Cape Cod surrounded by those who loved her.  The legacy of her love, laughter and feistiness lives on in all of us.
